Another of the earlier Kinsey Millhone books. This time has Kinsey picking up mid investigation for a PI who died of a heart attack while working on a civil suit (or did he die of a heart attack… dun dun dun…)
Five years previously, David Barney had been acquitted of murdering his wife Isabelle, a successful architect. Barney had also been an architect, was separated from his wife, and had been jealous of her success. It wasn’t Isabelle’s first marriage, in fact, they were both married to other people when they got together as the result of an affair. Then there is Isabelle’s sister who can no longer have children due to a car accident that was Isabelle’s fault. Then Isabelle’s former boss… the list of enemies goes on and on and on… In the middle of the investigation Kinsey finds more questions than answers.
Though I did predict the sub plot fairly early on, I enjoyed this one. Kinsey was vulnerable, but not too approachable. They mystery was interesting and layered. The last scene was a bit too dramatic for my taste, but overall this was a nice little read.
