I almost feel like I should have re-read The Search for WondLa before reading this sequel as it takes up the action where the other book left off. Eva Nine spent her first eleven years in a Sanctuary cared for by Muthr, a robot who sacrificed her life for Eva Nine. Though the memories are difficult, Eva is eager to go with Hailey on his ship Bijou to see New Attica. Once there she is amazed at Cadmus Pryde and all the interesting technological innovations, yet she wonders why no one has left. As she travels through New Attica she doesn’t know which of her new friends is trustworthy, and worse, she’s been separated from Rovee. Eventually Eva runs into Eva Eight, who also grew up in the sanctuary with Muthr. Together, they visit the underground and find out that Cadmus Pryde has dangerous plans. In an effort to save all of Orbona Eva has to learn who to trust. She also has to test the limits of her own strength and loyalty.
I really enjoyed this last installment. It is a bit darker than the first book, which I think is a realistic way for the story to go. I enjoyed some of the new characters that were introduced, and again, the illustrations were pleasant. I am pretty good at seeing where YA books are headed, but this one had a few surprises. Once again, I think this is writing for middle grade at its best. I enjoy the descriptions, and that the pace of the action continues to keep interest without becoming overwhelming.
